ABC National

safety/OSHA Partnership
OSHA Partnership

Better health and safety for construction workers is the goal of a new strategic partnership launched by ABC Keystone and the U. S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

A key goal of the partnership is to increase the number of ABC member companies in the association's Safety Training and Evaluation Process (S.T.E.P.) - a voluntary program that guides employees in evaluating and increasing the effectiveness of their safety and health programs, policies and procedures.  Other objectives of the partnership include reducing injuries from falls, struck-by and caught-in mishaps and electrocutions, and mentoring S.T.E.P. applicants to move from Bronze to Platinum, ABC's highest S.T.E.P. award level.

OSHA Partnership Signing
(L-R) Doug Dvorchak, Safety Committee member; Scott Gerberich, Safety Committee Chair; Dale Glacken, OSHA; Sherry Evans, ABC Staff; Jack Zimmer, Chapter President & CEO; Denise Clelan, 2006 Chairwoman of the Board; and Bob Fink, OSHA, signed the Chapter agreement in September 2006.

Press release announcing the one year anniversary of the partnership.

Another requirement of the partnership is to hold non-enforcement verification audits with randomly chosen companies in the partnership. Richard D. Poole, LLC, was one of thee companies who experienced a partnership visit.  Here is what Richard D. Poole, LLC, thought about that audit:

On July 9, 2007, Richard D. Poole, LLC, received an OSHA Partnership full site inspection at our HanoverHospital project.  This was unannounced and was treated as if it were an actual inspection where citations could be issued. When Dale Glacken, OSHA’s inspector, showed up on site accompanied by ABC’s Sherry Evans, our Superintendent and Site Safety Representative were notified for the inspection.

The inspection was educational for all who were involved.  We were able to ask questions and discuss potential violations as well as solutions that we typically would not ask during a random OSHA inspection.  The atmosphere was much more relaxed with this type of inspection which allowed communication the entire time between everyone involved.

The inspection lasted approximately two hours from start to finish.  This experience was well worth our time and we strongly encourage other contractors to participate and get involved.  We look forward for this type of inspection to continue and grow throughout the construction industry to ensure a safe and healthy work place.

Regards,
Richard D. Poole, LLC
